The contrast could not be greater, and the reflection on the abysmal lack of political leadership in Australia heightened as a consequence. On Friday US president Barack Obama provided a salient lesson to Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott in how to be an individual who leads and does not pander.President Obama stood before a crowd of 100 Muslim Americans at the White House and defended the right of that faith to build a mosque near the site of 9/11. Do you think Ms Gillard or Mr Abbott would deliver such an unambiguous defence of tolerance and religious freedom, given their obsession with mouthing platitudes to keep insecure and fearful voters in Western Sydney happy? |

Bob Hawke says there is no way to "stop the boats" as Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has claimed he will do to the asylum-seeking craft regularly arriving on islands off Australia’s north-west coast.The former Labor prime minister repeated his attack on Mr Abbott describing him as "mad as a cut snake" and said Australia needed people like those arriving by boat to claim asylum because they had initiative and courage. |
