About the Lecture
Hamas’s 7 October 2023 attacks shocked the state of Israel to its core. Israeli leaders branded it as their 9/11 and therefore unleashed a devastating response in Gaza. Their claim could not be further from the truth. There is no comparison between what Israel has done in retaliation to 7/10 and what the US did in response to 9/11. This is not the first time that Israel has used the analogy to ensure its continued policy of occupation.

This lecture discusses differences between Israel’s 7/10 and America’s 9/11 in both the historical and prevailing context. In this, it casts a critical eye on the Gaza war, along with its regional and global implications.

About the Speaker
Amin Saikal, AM, FASSA is an Adjunct Professor of Social Sciences at the Centre for Muslim States and Societies, The University of Western Australia; Emeritus Professor of Middle Eastern and Central Asian Studies at the Australian National University; and Adjunct Senior Fellow at S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University (Singapore).

He is the author of many books, most recently including How to Lose a War: The Story of America’s Intervention in Afghanistan (Yale University Press, 2024); Iran Rising: The Survival and Future of the Islamic Republic (Princeton University Press, 2021); and Islam Beyond Borders: The Umma in World Politics (Cambridge University Press, 2019, co-author)
