South Asia: Human Security, Environment, People and Place

The Centre for Muslim States and Societies (CMSS) is pleased to invite you to attend the symposium on
South Asia: Human Security, Environment, People and Place
on 29 August 2023, to be held at the University of Western Australia.

Dominant discourses on South Asia tend to view the region by focusing on its power players and geopolitical struggles. This overlooks its great intra-regional diversity, the plight of minorities, its growing diasporas, the ecological and environmental risks, and the larger human security related issues such as food security, which have deep implications for communities, politics, and international relations of the region. This one-day symposium aims to focus precisely on these aspects of the region, going beyond the usual focus on geopolitics and state actors.

On this occasion a new book, The Geopolitics of Melting Mountains, by Dr. Alexander E. Davis, Lecturer, the University of Western Australia, will be launched by Dr Ruth Gamble, Lecturer, La Trobe University

Speakers: The symposium will feature several academics and practitioners specialising in the different aspects of South Asian region, including:
