Help Us Rewrite the Narrative — Your Story Matters

As-Salaam-Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu,

As Muslims living in Australia, we know all too well how our community is often portrayed in the media. We are frequently the subject of negative headlines during times of crisis and public debate, while our contributions, achievements, and everyday acts of excellence are rarely given the spotlight they deserve.

The power to reshape the narrative starts with us. We must actively step forward, share our achievements, highlight the changemakers among us, and offer the media and the public a fuller, more accurate and positive picture of who we are. Our stories of innovation, contribution, resilience, and faith deserve to be told. The truth is, journalists and media agencies are often looking for content, if we don’t give them our stories, they’ll continue writing theirs.

There are so many wonderful and inspiring stories in our community, stories of compassion, entrepreneurship, leadership, resilience, and meaningful contributions to wider society and faith. But they will remain invisible unless we bring them to light.

If you, your organisation, or someone you know has a story worth sharing, big or small, please email us – media@anic.org.au We’ll help guide and support you through every step of the process to ensure your story is told in a professional, dignified, and impactful way.

Whether it’s a personal milestone, a community initiative, or a silent win, every story matters and helps paint a more truthful, positive and dignified picture of who we are.

Let’s take ownership of our voice. Together, we can shift the narrative and show Australia the reality of the Australian Muslim community, not just through what we say, but through what we do and achieve every day.

Masha’Allah, this needs to be copied, printed, and placed in every Masajid and school across the metro; at shops, pin-up boards and centres alike. A great initiative, Sr Aisha reaching out to the community Ummah in this way.

A great initiative! I too will be in contact. Insha’Allah. It may/should even inspire us to organise positive events and community happenings. Remember, we as an Ummah are the best of people – we don’t need to be (only) getting stories to them where we’re ‘competing’ in status and ‘accomplishments.’

Organise an event – cultural, multi-cultural, community-based events, food or clothing appeals, volunteer work at old people’s homes, care facilities, planting trees, clean-ups and the like, whatever – BRAINSTORM – make an impact (no matter ‘the size’) and send it in! This is nice.

I’ve always thought, as have my family and friends, that if anyone says/propagates negative things against us it’s because they don’t know who we are… and that’s OUR fault.

May Allah Guide, Protect, and Give us the strength and Taufiq to be seen and heard.

Put this up – universities, shops, schools and centres, as mentioned. Let us all see and know about this and spread the word, so all are (at least) in the know, so when we, or another – brother, sister, or mother – have a tale to tell, we’ll say, “Insha’Allah, get this story into ANIC! That’s one for the[ir] news!” No matter what the ‘size’ or contribution!

Wassalam wr wb and may Allah Reward the initiative.

    Ameen
