Born in Hobart, Tasmania, Salmaan Parkar actively sought Islamic Education from a young age. Having completed the memorization of the Qurʾān in his teenage years, he went on to complete a rigorous seven-year Islamic course in Johannesburg, South Africa, being conferred various ijāzāt (traditional licenses) in canonical ḥadīth collections, classical texts and dedicated religious treatises. He has also been conferred ijāzāt in the Qurʾān’s eponymous reading tradition (al-qirāʾāt al-sabʿ), after learning well-known tracts and receiving specialised training in the oral praxis. He has had the privilege of studying under the then Grand Mufti of South Africa, Muftī Raḍā al-Ḥaqq amongst other prominent scholars. Salmaan supplemented his previous religious study by completing a Bachelor of Islamic Studies and a Graduate Certificate in Contemporary Islamic Studies at Charles Sturt University/ISRA Australia. He is currently writing his Masters Thesis, in pursuit of a Master of Islamic Studies from the same institution.
Having served in the Religion & Arabic Language Departments at the Australian Islamic College for 5 years, Salmaan brings with him a variety of experiences acquired from his education and service in South Africa, Qatar & Australia. Salmaan currently resides in Perth, Western Australia and serves as the Imam of the largest mosque in Western Australia, Masjid Al-Raḥmān Gosnells. He is a member of the Australian National Imams Council (ANIC), Jamʿiatul Ulamā Al-Islam of Western Australia, British Board of Scholars & Imams (BBSI) & other scholarly bodies. Salmaan is also a registered marriage celebrant and has been providing services in this capacity for well over a decade.
