Alliance Against Islamophobia Files Landmark Complaint Against Peter Dutton
Date: 5 August 2024
Location: Sydney
In a bold move, the Alliance Against Islamophobia (AAI), represented by Birchgrove Legal, has lodged a significant religious vilification complaint with the New South Wales Anti-Discrimination Board against Mr Peter Dutton.
This landmark action will test new religious vilification laws following Mr Dutton’s controversial
comments, in which he described Muslim candidates from western Sydney as a “disaster” for a minority government.
Mr Dutton’s remarks spark widespread condemnation, including from national cricketer Usman Khawaja. The comments are seen as deeply offensive and are perceived to promote the dangerous notion that individuals should be judged solely based on their religious background.
This kind of rhetoric, AAI argues, fosters an environment where people from the Muslim community are viewed as inherently dangerous, regardless of their personal story.
A spokesperson for AAI stated, “That’s not a decent way to treat any group, because it strips them of their humanity. No group of people in Australia deserve to be treated that way.”
The organisation emphasises that Mr Dutton’s statements reflect a troubling attitude towards
Australia’s multicultural society and the principle of equality before the law.
These remarks, AAI contends, threaten ongoing efforts to build a more inclusive and harmonious
society, especially in light of a recent 1300% increase in Islamophobia observed amid the Gaza conflict.
The complaint also brings to light concerns about the relationship between Mr Dutton’s office and
organisations linked to far-right Hindutva extremist groups in India, which are known for
promoting religious persecution against minorities, including Christians, Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus from caste oppressed communities.
The growth of far-right Hindutva extremism in Australia, highlighted in the ABC investigative
article “Infiltrating Australia – India’s Secret War” raises significant fears about safety and security
within the Indian diaspora and the broader Australian community.
This investigative piece underscores the threat posed by far-right Hindutva extremism to social
cohesion and Australia’s multicultural values.
“For any potential leader of this country, it is imperative to demonstrate diligence and
responsibility, rather than increasing hostility and discrimination against any community,” the AAI
spokesperson urged.
The organisation hopes this complaint sets a precedent for protecting religious minorities and
promoting unity and respect in Australia.
