MELBOURNE: Pakistan-born Australian legspinner Fawad Ahmed wants to be a role model for his community not just through his cricketing skills but also wants to showcase the true meaning of his religion via the game. An asylum seeker in Australia after fleeing Pakistan in 2010, Ahmed earned a T20 entry in the Kangaroo squad in August 2013 and has since played 3 ODIs and 2 T20 for the national side.

Aussie Muslim Footballer Offers Role Model

 Houli is the first devout Muslim from a Lebanese background to play in Australia Football League (AFL).

 

SYDNEY – Offering a role model to young Muslims, Australia’s Richmond Muslim player Bachar Houli has participated in a football cup organized by Sydney Islamic schools.

"When I look at the Indigenous community, I envy the way they go about things, and I'm trying to emulate their programs. And they've got fantastic talent -- it's great to see -- and that's what I see in my community as well, fantastic talent,” Houli said as he visited the students cup in Western Sydney in his day off from Richmond training, SBS reported on Wednesday, May 27.

Food industry back Senate certification inquiry, hopes to address 'misinformation' about halal

The food industry has welcomed a Senate inquiry into food certification schemes, saying it is a chance to address "misinformation" about halal certification in particular.

The Australian Food and Grocery Council chief executive Gary Dawson said halal certification was worth billions of dollars for Australian exporters, who would lose access to some of their most important markets without it.

REMEMBER the beginning of Ramadan last year: the festive supermarkets with their jampacked aisles, the makeshift roadside stalls outside restaurants selling crisp sambusas and subiya, the sounds of Adhan emanating from Masajid...

My house overlooked a Maghsalat-Al-Amwaat Al-Khairiyyah (a charitable organization which prepares bodies for burial in the Islamic manner), and as I walked home from the neighborhood supermarket laden with packages of food and other essentials in preparation of the next day’s fast, I caught sight of a family accompanying a bier in a hearse. The women huddled together, sobbing quietly, while the men stood at a distance in somber silence.

Udhiya (Qurbani)

What is Udhiya? 

 

‘Udhiya’ is an Arabic word meaning "blood sacrifice", and ‘Qurbani’ is an Urdu and Persian word derived from the Arabic word "Qurban" which literally means an act performed to seek Allah Ta’ala’s pleasure. It is technically used for the sacrifice of an animal slaughtered for the sake of Allah Ta’ala.

 

The sacrifice of an animal has always been a recognised form of worship in many religions, but in the ‘Shariah’ (Islamic sacred law) of The Last and Final Messenger of Allah Ta’ala (Peace be upon him), the sacrifice of an animal has been recognised as a form of ibadah (worship) during the three days of the month Zul Hijjah, namely the 10th, 11th, and 12th .
